Could overusing salicylic acid face wash cause increased scaling and burning?

Yes, overusing salicylic acid can definitely cause irritation, burning, and even more scaling. Salicylic acid can be drying and irritating when used too frequently, especially on sensitive skin affected by seborrheic dermatitis.

A MySebDermTeam member advised, "Be careful not to overdo the salicylic on your face, and switch to Vaseline if you experience some burning." Another member shared they use their salicylic acid product "every other wash to maybe decrease the dryness." What can you do to calm the burning and scaling right now?

Here are some steps to help soothe your irritated skin:

* Stop using the salicylic acid face wash immediately until your skin calms down
* Apply petroleum jelly (Vaseline) to the burning areas to create a protective barrier and reduce irritation
* Use only cool water to cleanse your face gently
* Apply a fragrance-free, noncomedogenic moisturizer right after cleansing to help hydrate your skin

Avoid getting any products in your eyes, nose, or mouth, especially around your ears where the skin is sensitive. How should you use salicylic acid going forward?

Once your skin heals, consider using salicylic acid products less frequently - perhaps every other day or a few times per week rather than daily. You can alternate between your salicylic acid cleanser and a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser to avoid over-drying.

If irritation, burning, or increased scaling continues even after stopping the product, contact your dermatology provider. They can assess whether you need a different treatment approach or if the concentration of salicylic acid was too strong for your skin.
