A MySebDermTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hello all,

Been dealing with SD for a few months now. It all abruptly started after inner tubing with friends down the Chattahoochee River. I had never dealt with any skin issues previously but a weird rash appeared on my forehead the literal next day. I was initially prescribed Silver Sulfadiazine 1% via telehealth but it did little to address the issue. I then visited a dermatologist who discontinued the SS1% and prescribed Elidel 1% for 8 weeks. The Elidel worked and cleared my rash but I'm… read more

Maybe look into some antifungal creams or shampoos. A lot of people on reddit find that bulletproof MCT oil applied topically can be helpful as a moisturizer

Be careful in some of our streams especially where industrial chemicals might have gotten into the water. We knew someone who swam in the channels in Florida who got a really bad infection. After the flood here in Asheville the chemicals for the water to purify is so strong while showering you can smell the chlorine. My skin has suffered before and after. It sounds like you are heading on the right tract with doing the things that will help your skin and health. The anti inflammatory diet and watching your sugar intake is the best thing you can do for you. I’m very proud of you and your heading in the right direction. Remember to take the suggested vitamins in the resources section. You may be lacking these vitamins and it’s very important to be healthy to fight sebaceous Dermititis. I have been low on B12 and D K, C and some minerals. You will heal faster. Happy New Year!

It’s possible that exposure to water from the Chattahoochee River could have introduced irritants, bacteria, or fungi that triggered your seborrheic dermatitis (SD). Malassezia yeast, which naturally occurs on the skin, is often linked to SD, and environmental factors like water exposure might disrupt the skin's balance, leading to flare-ups. Since Ciclopirox hasn’t been effective, consider discussing alternative treatments like medicated shampoos, antifungal creams, or lifestyle adjustments with your dermatologist. Sharing your experience with water exposure might also help them pinpoint triggers.
